A Piece of Northeast Kansas City…

Lykins is one of seven neighborhoods that make up the Historic Northeast. This triangle-shaped community is home to approximately 4,000 residents and is celebrated for its rich history, cultural diversity, and strong neighborhood pride. The neighborhood is bounded to the north by Independence Avenue, to the south by Truman Road (Railroads), to the west by Hardesty Avenue, and to the east by Benton Blvd

The neighborhood takes its name from Dr. Johnston Lykins, a physician, educator, missionary, and Kansas City’s first elected mayor. In the mid-1800s, he played a foundational role in the city’s early development, contributing to education, civic leadership, and the establishment of schools and churches that supported early community life.

By the early 1900s, streetcar access connected Lykins residents to jobs, shops, and public institutions across Kansas City. Victorian homes and Craftsman bungalows from this period are still in use today. As Kansas City changed in the decades after World War II, Lykins saw less investment even as residents continued to occupy and care for the neighborhood.

Today, Lykins is home to a diverse population representing a wide range of cultural backgrounds, shaped by both long-standing residents and newer households building community connections. Lykins continues to move forward through community involvement, local leadership, and growing attention to neighborhood needs. Its historic homes, proximity to downtown, and active community base provide a strong foundation for future neighborhood initiatives.

Meet the Team

Our neighborhood assets

  • Development

In 2018, the Lykins Neighborhood, with the expertise of Neighborhood Legal Support, took on an ambitious project to address blight, safety, and quality of life in the neighborhood. Working with almost 20 rehabbers and development groups, the Neighborhood has become its own Master Developer with the goal of improving as many properties as possible, developing new ones, and establishing a diverse mix of family incomes that reflects the cultural diversity of the neighborhood. To date the Project includes over 120 properties in various phases of redevelopment.

  • Schools

Whittier Elementary is located within the boundaries of Lykins and has a remarkably diverse and engaged population. Whittier tops the list for attendance rates and academic performance in the Kansas City Public School District.  Other public schools serving the neighborhood are Northeast and East High Schools and Northeast Middle School.

Information about schools can be found at Show Me KC Schools, the office conveniently next door in Pendleton Heights. Charter, private & parochial schools are also available to Lykins residents.

  • Restaurants

There are so many great restaurants to explore in the Northeast, especially small, family-owned ethnic restaurants that provide both adventure and delicious cuisine.
